Depression

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called "winter blues", is a form of depression that occurs during the winter months. SAD is a real medical condition that can affect anyone, even those who are not predisposed to depression, and can challenge your ability to perform routine daily activities.

Although the exact cause of SAD is unknown, it is believed that decreasing amounts of sunlight and colder temperatures in the fall and winter months could be directly related. SAD most commonly affects men and women living in colder climates, increasing according to distance from the equator.

Symptoms:
• Feeling sad or blue
•Crying spells
•Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
•Significant increase or decrease in appetitie
•Significant weight loss or weight gain
•Agitation or irritability
•Fatigue or loss of energy
•Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt

There are many treatments available for SAD, including light therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and antidepressants.
